About the Brimstone

Likely the original butter fly — the word butterfly may derive from butter-coloured fly describing the male brimstone. One of the longest-lived butterflies, surviving 10-11 months as adults. They are the first butterflies to emerge in spring after hibernating. Males are bright sulfur yellow, females pale greenish-white. Their wing shape perfectly mimics a leaf when closed. Food plants are buckthorn and alder buckthorn.
