Hornet Moth

About the Hornet Moth

A large clearwing moth that looks remarkably like a hornet, with transparent wings and a yellow-and-black striped body. This mimicry protects it from birds. Its caterpillars spend two or more years boring into the trunks and roots of poplars and willows. Adults emerge in early summer mornings and rest on tree trunks.
