About the Peppered Moth
The textbook example of natural selection in action. Before the Industrial Revolution, most were white with black speckles. As trees blackened from pollution, a dark mutant form became common because birds could not see them against sooty bark. After clean air laws, the white form rebounded. First described by a schoolteacher in 1848. The most-studied example of evolution occurring in real time.
