About the Black-veined White
A large white butterfly with distinctive black veins across its almost scaleless wings. Caterpillars feed on hawthorn, blackthorn, and fruit trees and live together in silk nests over winter. Populations can boom and crash dramatically. It became extinct in Britain in the 1920s, and the reasons are still debated. It remains widespread across mainland Europe and Asia.
