About the Common Buckeye

Named for their large, colorful eyespots that resemble the eye of a deer (buck eye). Their eyespots startle predators and deflect attacks away from vital body parts. They are rapid, low fliers that prefer open, disturbed areas. Their caterpillars feed on plantain and snapdragon. The multicolored eyespots are among the most complex color patterns in butterflies. Expand their range northward each summer.
