About the Great Spangled Fritillary
A large orange butterfly with black markings above and silver spots on the underside of the hindwings. Its caterpillars feed only on violets. The tiny caterpillars hatch in late summer and spend the winter without eating, then find violet leaves in spring. One of the most familiar butterflies of North American meadows, often seen on milkweed flowers.
