About the Large Tortoiseshell
A larger, duller relative of the Small Tortoiseshell, orange with black spots and blue spots along the wing edges. Its caterpillars feed on elms, willows, and other trees. Adults hibernate through winter. Once found across southern England, it declined sharply in the twentieth century and is now considered extinct as a breeding species in Britain, though occasional sightings occur.
