About the Marbled White
Despite the name, they are not actually white butterflies but belong to the Satyrinae (browns). Their bold black-and-white checked pattern is unique among European butterflies. They are slow, floppy fliers that are easy to observe. Caterpillars feed on grasses at night. Emerging in mid-summer, they are a sign of good grassland habitat. Their colonies can contain thousands of individuals in good years.
