About the Meadow Brown
One of the most common butterflies in European grasslands, brown with an orange patch and a black eyespot on the forewing. It flies even in dull weather when most butterflies stay hidden. Caterpillars feed on grasses. The geneticist E. B. Ford and colleagues studied variation in the spots on its hindwings to understand natural selection in wild populations.
