About the Red Admiral

One of the most widespread and recognizable butterflies. Males are territorial and will chase away any intruder including much larger birds and humans. They migrate north each spring from southern wintering grounds. Their red bands vary in width — wider bands correlate with more successful mating. Attracted to fermenting fruit and sap flows. Can survive mild winters as adults in northern areas.
