About the Small Tortoiseshell

Once the most common butterfly in Britain, populations have declined dramatically in southern England. Their caterpillars feed exclusively on nettles. They hibernate as adults in houses, sheds, and hollow trees. When emerging in spring, their colors are faded from months of wear. Highly territorial — males perch on sunny spots and chase rivals. Wing pattern provides excellent camouflage when closed.
