About the Speckled Wood
A brown butterfly dotted with cream spots, perfectly matched to the dappled light of woodland rides. Males defend patches of sunlight on the forest floor against rivals in spiraling flights. A classic study showed that the male already holding a sunspot usually wins. It is one of few butterflies that can overwinter as either caterpillar or pupa. It has expanded its range northward.
