About the Variable Cracker
A gray, finely patterned butterfly that rests head-down on tree trunks, where it is almost invisible against the bark. Males make loud cracking or clicking sounds with their wings during territorial flights, which gave cracker butterflies their name. Adults feed on rotting fruit and sap rather than nectar. It flies in dry and open forests.
