About the Apollo
A white mountain butterfly with black spots and bright red eyespots on its hindwings. Found in alpine meadows from Spain to Mongolia. After mating, the male seals the female with a waxy plug called a sphragis that prevents other males from mating with her. Collecting, habitat change, and a warming climate have caused declines, and it is protected under international trade rules.
