About the Swallowtail (Old World)
One of the most recognized butterflies with distinctive tail-like extensions on their hindwings. Their scientific name comes from Machaon, a physician in Greek mythology. Caterpillars have an orange osmeterium (forked scent gland) that they evert when threatened, releasing a foul smell. The first butterfly species to receive a scientific name, described by Linnaeus in 1758.
