About the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail
A large yellow swallowtail with bold black tiger stripes, one of the most familiar butterflies of eastern North America. Some females are almost entirely black, a form thought to mimic the toxic Pipevine Swallowtail and so avoid birds. Caterpillars feed on trees such as tulip tree, cherry, and ash. It is the official state butterfly of several US states, including Georgia and Virginia.
