About the Giant Swallowtail
One of the largest butterflies in North America, dark brown with broad yellow bands. Its caterpillar looks remarkably like a fresh bird dropping, which protects it from predators. Because the caterpillars feed on citrus leaves, growers have called them orange dogs. Western populations are now often treated as a separate species, the Western Giant Swallowtail.
