About the Vampire Moth
A brown moth whose barbed proboscis is strong enough to pierce fruit skin. Males of this species have been observed piercing human skin to drink blood, an extremely rare behavior among moths. Females feed only on fruit juices. Blood feeding may supply salts or other nutrients. Caterpillars feed on meadow rue.
